With Covid 19 virus still causing havoc and racetracks in the northeast still closed down, the Zimmer Service Center ULMS Late Model Series is postponing the season until things reopen. So far the ULMS Racing Series has lost five events on the 20th anniversary season with events at Port Royal, Williams Grove and Selinsgrove all falling victim to Covid 19 and state closures for non-essential businesses.
One of those five events have already been awarded a makeup date and that will be Sunday October 18, 2020 at Port Royal Speedway with the Short Track Super Series Big Block Modifieds. ULMS Racing Series, owner and promoter, Chris Zuver, has stated he will be looking to refill the other dates hopefully with Williams Grove, Port Royal and Selinsgrove later in the racing season.
“With the recent news from both New York and Pennsylvania government indicating that entertainment venues will not be opening in the soon future, it is just better we postpone our season until the tracks we deal with can open”, stated Zuver. “We have three events coming up in May at Thunder Mountain, Freedom and Hidden Valley and we hope and pray that these tracks can open and we can continue our season as scheduled but we realize that may not happen.”
For the 2020 season, ULMS had split their schedule into two regions, with two point funds and a $10,000 bonus if one driver swept both regions. At this time, we still plan on having two regions, as well as two champions, with the bonus as we do need to make up at least two of the four events in March and April that were lost due to Covid 19. For the bonus to happen, the series needs 10 events in each region. With the state governments not allowing tracks to reopen with fans at this time, there is a possibility that many dates in the north regions will soon become victim of cancellations. If this becomes reality and enough dates are not able to be made up, we are looking at combining everything together for one set of points and one championship point fund. This decision will not come until a later date, but it is something that ULMS series management is looking at. The series next 7 events are all north region dates until mid-July when the Junior Eckert Memorial takes place at Trail-way Speedway for a south region event.
“I have been optimistic about our season reopening on Memorial Day weekend but reality was telling me mid-June and I am still hopeful to be at the tracks with all our race teams by then if not before, but at the same time, I have to look at what can happen if the majority of the season is lost due to the pandemic”, stated Zuver. “Let’s all hope we can get back going soon and who knows? Maybe we will see lots of September and October racing this year as we all try to make up lost dates.”
If some of our events are held without fans but with pay per view only option, we will definitely be involved and we will use those events as normal ULMS point events, whether there is two regions or just one overall series points as the series has done for the past 19 years. The entire ULMS Racing Series management hopes everyone stays safe and healthy and that our state governments reopen essential businesses along with entertainment venues in the very near future, even if there are restrictions of mask or no masks, sanitization stations, social distancing and whatever else is put in place.
