The Zimmer’s Service Center United Late Model Series made its first ever visit to Outlaw Speedway in Dundee, NY Friday night for the Steve Kent Memorial Summer Nationals. The first time the super late models have been on the 4/10 mile oval since 2019.
The night started off with three time defending series champion, Max Blair setting the Integra Shocks Fast Time in qualifying and he would also win the opening heat over local hero Bryce Davis. Wyatt Scott out raced Mike Wonderling Jr in heat number two while Dave Hess won heat number three over David Scott. Hess would come back and win the Jay’s Auto Wrecking pole scramble and the $100 prize that went with it to start on the front row with Blair in the 30 lap main event.
With four wide salute and fireworks going off central NY modified fans were about to see a clinic by Dave Hess Jr. Once the event started it was no doubt that the 44 of Hess was going be hard to beat as he quickly opened his lead over Blair and Bryce Davis. By lap eight “The Wizard” was already in lap traffic as Davis and Blair battled for second and a heated battle behind them with Greg Oakes, David and Wyatt Scott all battling for position. Lap eleven saw the one and only caution flag come out for Brad Smith as he slowed with a left rear flat tire. This was the last time anyone was able to be close to Hess as again he left the field in his wake on the restart. Davis would grab second from Blair as Blair would come back and retake the runner up spot but it was short lived as Bryce has thousand of laps on the 4/10 mile oval got around Blair and his #111v Viper Motorsports Rocket. With ten laps to go Hess had opened a 8 second lead over Blair who was now fending off the challenges of Oakes, the Scott’s, Chad Homan and Mike Smith all were within arms reach of each other while maneuvering around lap traffic.
Bryce Davis and his #94 GRT had clipped into the lead of Hess but time was running out and the late race caution that was needed never materialized as Hess won by over 6 seconds, with Davis grabbing second in front of many of his hometown fans. Blair came home third over Oakes and Chad Homan took his first ever top five finish in his super late model debut in the only Lazer chassis entry. The win as Hess’s second ULMS win of the season!
