Matt Sponaugle of Wylie Fork, WV picked up his first career Zimmer Service Center ULMS Late Model Series win Friday night at the Bedford Fairgrounds Speedway. The win was worth $4000 as Sponaugle led the entire 40 lap event. The Saturday program at Port Royal Speedway saw all qualifying events completed before rain washed out the feature events. The main event will be made up September 5th.
Friday nights, Bedford Summer Fest was put together due to the county fair being cancelled due to Covid19. A very nice crowd was on hand for the 3 division program and witness ULMS Late Model Series, point leader and defending two time champion, Max Blair set Integra Shocks Fast Time.
Jeff Rine and Sponaugle led the field to green on the big 5/8 mile fairground oval. Sponaugle used the outside groove to race by Rine down the backstretch with Blair in third. The first yellow came out on the opening lap being completed for Nathan Lasalle. On the restart Jim Yoder came to a stop in turn one. The restart would see Jason Covert shot from seventh to fifth in turns one and two. With five laps in the event, Sponaugle had opened up a 20 car length lead over Rine, who was being pressured by Blair with Dylan Yoder, Covert and Gregg Satterlee rounding out the top six.
Covert would apply the pressure on Yoder for fourth and would take the spot on lap 8 as Sponaugle lead now was a half straightaway. As the laps clicked away, lap 15 saw Rine and Blair both closing in on Sponaugle and closing in fast! Lap 18 the top 3 were separated by a few car lengths of each other. The yellow lights came on lap 21 for Larry Niederer and lap 23 for Tim Smith. On the lap 23 restart the trio of Sponaugle, Rine and Blair ran away from rest of the field as Covert and Yoder continued their battle for 4th and Ross Robinson and Satterlee battled for six and the pair of Andy Haus and Matt Cosner were dueling for 8th.
With ten to go Sponaugle was six car lengths ahead of Rine and Blair was making a charge for second. Five to go saw Rine on the rear bumper of Sponaugle with Blair still in striking distance but Sponaugle drove a flawless final five laps to capture his first ever ULMS win over Rine, Blair, Covert, Dylan Yoder, Satterlee, Haus, Cosner and Chuck Clise rounding out the top five. The three heat winners were Blair, Cosner and Rine.
The Zimmer Service Center ULMS Late Model Series visited Port Royal Speedway for the first time on the season in part of their Living Legends Dream Night. The 30 lap main event paying $3000 to win would get rained out before both sprint car and ULMS feature events were completed as all qualifying events were held. Thirty four late models were on hand which saw Hayes Mattern setting the Integra Shocks Fast Time lap of 18.6140. The four heat winners were Mason Zeigler, Max Blair, Michael Norris and Gregg Satterlee. Gene Knaub won the consolation. Provisionals were David Scott (ULMS), Mike Lupfer (Port Royal) and Jason Dobson using a ULMS Emergency provisional.
The event will made up in part of a double header program on September 5 when the ULMS Late Model Series returns to Port Royal for the Butch Renninger Memorial.
