David Scott of Garland, PA came home the big winner last night at Freedom Motorsports Park in the 5th annual Ron Baker Memorial for the Zimmer Service Center ULMS Late Model Series. Slowride picked up his first ULMS win since 2013 and his tenth career ULMS win driving the Terry Suppa owned #4s CJ Rayburn Chassis.
The 30 lap main event saw Mike Wonderling driving a #74 lettered machine in honor of Ron Baker, paced the 4 wide salute in front of an overflowing packed crowd at Freedom. Once the green was dropped to start the event, Bryce Davis out dragged Max Blair at the start from his outside pole position to lead lap one, only to see the caution come out after the first lap completed for Wyatt Scott.
Davis again shot in the lead on the restart and kept Blair behind him as David Scott was in third with Chub Frank, Boom Briggs and Dave Hess battling for fourth. The second caution slowed the field on lap 4 for Cody Egner. Davis again set the pace and held Blair off on the restart with Scott now sitting few car lengths back as Blair began pressuring Bryce for the lead on lap 6 and 7 and finishing the lead change on lap 8 with Scott grabbing second one lap later. Lap 10 would see disaster for the leader Blair as he pulled up lame in turns one and two with a left rear flat tire handing the lead over to David Scott.
Scott restarted the field as the new leader with Davis in second but he had Chub, Hess and Boom breathing down his neck. Chub and Hess would both get around the #94 GRT machine of Davis as Slowride was off pulling away. The battle to watch was between the Club 29 cars of Frank and Hess who would race side by side. The next caution would come out on lap 13 when Michael Lake got sideways and was collected Ed Carley, and Doug Eck. All three drivers were ok and were done for the evening.
Scott again took off on the restart while the Chub and Hess battle continued for second. Boom and Davis were battling for 4th as Blair was charging back thru the field from his lap 10 flat tire. As the laps clicked off the battle for second was still going on as Slowride was looking good to see victory lane when Blair who had made it back to fifth slowed again on lap 28 to bring the caution out for his second flat tire of the event.
Scott led the final two laps with Frank holding off Hess in the long race battle for second with Bryce Davis and Boom Briggs rounding out the top 5. Rounding out the top 10 were Greg Oakes, Mike Wonderling in the Ron Baker #74 tribute car, Blair, Brady Wonderling and Dave Dubois.
A jubilant David Scott emerged from his machine and had to thank his car owner Terry Suppa and crew chief Brad Nolte for putting “this hotrod under me tonight.” The #4s CJ Rayburn by BA is supported by Suppa Racing, Close Racing Supply, Car-Go Auto Parts and Genesis Racing Shocks.
Heat winners were Boom Briggs, Chub Frank and Scott. Blair was the Integra Shocks overall Fast time of the 19 cars on hand with a time of 13.490.
