Mercer, PA (March 26, 2016): After a long winter the roar of engines and the scent of racing fuel was in the air again for the Zimmer Service Center United E-Mod Series wth Mercer Raceway Park hosting the their annual “Chiller Thriller” in front of a near-full grandstands under 54° degree and sunny skies.
Twenty of the area’s best E-Mod pilots signed into the pit area with three heats run to set the starting field. The veteran Bill Taylor started heat one from the pole with Matt Lux alongside. Dan Davies and Ken Zimmer got together on lap one for the first caution of the evening on lap one. Zimmer had to be pushed from the track and was done for the evening. Lux and sixth starting Dave Scott ran side by side until Scott drew ahead on lap three and went on to the heat victory. Lux and Davies were second and third until Davies took over second at the completion of lap six.
Dennis Dellinger and Carl McKinney started heat two with McKinney taking the lead at the drop of green with fourth-starting Mike Potosky challenging while being challenged for the runner up spot by Will Thomas. Neither Potosky nor Thomas were able to compete the pass. McKinney went on to the preliminary win.
Heat three started with Greg Johnson and Joel Watson on the front row with Johnson getting the jump at the drop of green. Johnson, Watson, and Rich Michael Jr, three of the best, staged a three-way battle for the lead with Watson gaining the spot at the end of five laps. Watson went on to the win with Johnson holding off Michael for the runner-up spot until the final turn of the last lap when Michael narrowly gained the spot at the finish. The finishing order was Watson, Michael, and Johnson.
With the field set for the feature Matt Lux and Greg Johnson brought the field to green with Lux taking the lead but four cars piled up in turn four. Will Thomas, Bill Taylor, Shawn Shingledecker, and Troy Johnson were involved with Shingledecker going off on the hook. Lux again led to turn two but it was Johnson at the front at the end of one complete lap. On turn four of lap two Dan Davies looped his mount in four. At the green David Scott came to the front with Lux suddenly slowing in turn one, bringing caution again over the raceway. By the end of four Rich Michael Jr was second with Mike Potosky up to third. Caution flew at the end of nine when Johnson spun in turn four. Michael challenged at every turn but Scott kept the Tim Engle number 68 in front through lap fourteen when Johnson again spun in four. Again Scott led the Delaware restart back to green with Michael and Potosky in the second row. With five remaining Michael was again drawing alongside the leader but unable to compete the pass. Over the last five laps Scott was able to extend his lead, winning by three lengths over Michael, Mike Potosky, Dan Davies, and eleventh starting Josh Ferry fifth. Ferry’s car emitted a puff of smoke exiting the track.
